Narcos-Pablo Escobar

I was watching a series called Narcos which follows the story of Pablo Escobar, a drug lord in Medellin, Colombia. He is extremely entrepreneurial in spirit and paves his way to becoming one of the richest men in the world. His rise is unprecedented but his fall, extremely tragic. I loved the way the series depicted his last few days and certain scenes stuck with me and were deeply moving.

When his enemies find out where Pablo lives with his family, they attack his home and so they must move. He plans on sending his family away from him for their safety and in the middle of all this, his cute little daughter asks him, "Papa, how will Santa know where to find us?". His heart melts on hearing this, his eyes are teary and he gently holds his little girl and says, " Santa will always know where your pure heart is and so he will find you always!". This moment for me was so powerful, it so beautifully depicts the innocence of children, how they are unaware of the happenings around them and how the biggest concern for them is Santa Claus!

After being on the run for a long span, he decides to take shelter at a rustic farm owned by his father. His father is a man of principle, hardworking and lives hand to mouth. But his abode is a place of quiet, the sight of which brings a certain peace and calm in mind. The sight of white cows with black spots grazing on  lush green pastures, the joys of sitting around a bonfire after a days toiling, singing and laughing, simple cooking and eating with fellow men. This is in complete contradiction to the luxurious life that Pablo lived, yet the simplicity and the sanctity of the place stirs something in him and he expresses his wish to his father that once he reunites with his wife and two kids, he would love to buy a land and delve into farming with him. Says the richest man in the world! This made me think, what is important at the end of the day? It does not matter if you are the richest or the most powerful, our heart always seeks a home, togetherness with family and pines for simple acts like enjoying a meal together. The heart longs for simplicity, a clean conscience and a deep sleep on a comfortable bed with the assurance that people whom we love are safe and closer to us. There are moments when he cannot not even see his family from a distance, he can only speak with them over the radio. Were his riches of any use then?

After Pablo leaves his dad's home, he locks himself in a ramshackle house for days altogether, hiding from police and his enemies. One day he feels the need to venture outside in the city. So, he drives on to the streets. Being locked and in hiding deprives one of so much! The first moment of freedom is felt when he is driving and the soft breeze brushes by him and he revels in its pure joy.  He then visits a shop and orders strawberry with cream, takes the cup and sits on a bench to see the city of Medellin come to life in front of him. Simple joys! He sees an ice cream hawker pushing his cycle through the streets, a couple kissing, kids playing football, a dad teaching his son to ride a bicycle and it all brings a smile on his face. We come to appreciate these moments more so when we are deprived of them!

Brilliant acting and direction. Emotions captured beautifully.

Coming home to the blog.

Well! My last post was written three years ago, a post about wanting to be loved in return. Here, I am, already married to my love. Time does fly! There is a lot to write, lots of feelings, thoughts and moments that I have missed out writing about. But it is all within me and it has lead me here. I am extremely grateful for this beautiful journey.

Writing is very cathartic for me. When I feel overwhelmed by the intensity of my emotions or thoughts, I write. Every time I watch a movie and it stirs something within me, I write in my mind but do not reach out to the notebook or laptop.

Last time when I visited my grandparents and saw them in the phase that they are in, I wanted to write. I wanted to write about aging, the fragile nature of life, marriage, life filled with memories, the disability that disease brings, the longing to travel that my grandma had, the regrets that my haunt my grandpa's thoughts. How we think that we have lots of time, time to love, to fix relationships, to live our dreams, to pursue our passion. We feel we are going to be young forever. We cannot relate to old age, we cannot relate to being in a state of disease and inability. It made me feel so many things and  made me think about cherishing the present. I wanted to treasure the time that I was able to spend with them. I paid attention to their stories, their feelings, their thoughts, I listened and listened. I saw the wrinkles around their eyes, their smiles. I gave more hugs and felt their tender touch on my forehead. I appreciated each moment, I felt grateful for their presence in my life. My maa always wanted me to be independent, modern and strong! My granpa has always been there to listen, to guide and advise. I have had wonderful discussions with him about engineering versus medicine, my hatred towards math and shaky thoughts about engineering, about friends, love and life. I want my kids to experience this warmth and purest form of love that only grandparents can give.I feel blessed.

My Maa and Baapa

Here's wishing many more years of their togetherness and them showering love and blessings on us.
